LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Los Angeles area on Thursday morning, sending huge boulders crashing down Malibu Drive, visibly shaking the 1909 wooden Santa Monica Pier and jolting some people out of bed.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered four miles (seven kilometers) north of Malibu and at a depth of about seven miles (11 kilometers) below the surface.

The quake was felt 45 miles (72 kilometers) away in Orange County, where people reported things moving in their homes.

Officials in the area said authorities were surveying the damage, but had not found anything major.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Adam Zicco said the quake shook the area and shook for 15 or 20 seconds.

“We’re still doing a critical facility inspection, and we haven’t received anything major yet,” said Zico, whose station covers the area around Malibu and Westlake Village.

A live camera from the 115-year-old Santa Monica Pier, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Malibu, showed several seconds of intense shaking during the quake.

KTLA-TV reported that a crew was working to remove large rocks that had rolled down Malibu Canyon Road, near the epicenter of the quake.

Malibu Councilman Bruce Silverstein said he has lived in the community for 13 years and this was the hardest earthquake yet, but nothing broke.

“Our house shook for about two or three seconds,” Silverstein said. “I was worried the windows were going to break.”

The shaking lasted for a few seconds, and the kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, said Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen breakfast restaurant in Malibu.

“It wasn't that bad, thank God nothing fell,” Vasquez said.

People, including several celebrities, took to social media to post that they had been woken up by an earthquake.

“That earthquake was scary,” wrote hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton on X. Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian posted: “Oh my god, that was a big earthquake.”

Some residents said they received an alert from the state's earthquake early warning system.

The quake comes as the region grapples with three major wildfires east of Los Angeles that have burned dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The fires broke out during a severe heat wave that has just subsided.

The area has been hit by a number of earthquakes in recent months, including a 4.4-magnitude quake in August that rattled residents of the Los Angeles and San Diego area, shaking buildings, knocking goods off shelves and setting off car alarms. The quake also caused a pipe to burst in Pasadena’s ornate 1927 City Hall.
