Grayson County Schools are assessing earthquake damage

INDPENDENCE, Virginia (WDBJ) – Grayson County officials were busy Monday assessing damage to school buildings that were due to open later this week.

At least four of the seven public schools in the county were damaged during Sunday’s earthquake.

Late on Monday afternoon, one was released, the others are still being searched.

Stand outside Al Estiqlal Primary School, the damage is not clear.

On closer inspection, however, you can see cracks in the exterior brick extending from a point near the ceiling all the way almost to the floor.

In the gym, superintendent Kelly Wilmore showed us more evidence of earthquake strength, and more cracks in the ash-block wall behind the stage.

Wilmer told WDBJ7: “We feel satisfied that we’ll be fine, but we want the pros here to check again.”

In the early afternoon, Todd Boff was on the case. A structural engineer with OWPR in Blacksburg checked every trouble spot.

“The bricks are just wood veneer, so hopefully this is just an aesthetic problem,” he said after examining one of the areas where cracks were found.

With the social distancing that COVID-19 requires, Wilmer said he could not afford to lose much space.

But safety comes first, and the superintendent said the school system will do what it must to continue moving forward.

The school year was supposed to start on Thursday, but officials have delayed classes until next Tuesday, allowing time for any aftershocks and a thorough inspection.

Late on Monday afternoon, the engineer reported that Al-Istiqlal Primary School could be safely reopened on Tuesday.
