4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Los Angeles area
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Los Angeles area on Thursday morning, sending huge boulders crashing down Malibu Drive, shaking the 1909 wooden Santa Monica Pier and jolting some people out of bed. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered four miles north of Malibu and about seven miles below the surface.
The quake was felt as far away as Orange County, where residents reported moving objects inside their homes. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
Officials in the area said authorities were surveying the damage, but had not found anything major.
According to seismologist Lucy Jones of the California Institute of Technology, the quake struck near the Malibu Fault, but also near the Anacapa Fault. Earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5.0 are too small to be conclusively linked to the larger faults that are mapped on the Earth’s surface.
“It is an ordinary earthquake in southern California,” Jones said.
A live camera from the 115-year-old Santa Monica Pier, about 12 miles from Malibu, showed intense shaking that lasted for several seconds during the quake. Several morning news broadcasts caught the quake live as cameras shook in television studios.
KTLA-TV reported that a crew was working to remove large rocks that had rolled down Malibu Canyon Road, near the epicenter of the quake.
Malibu Councilman Bruce Silverstein said he has lived in the community for 13 years and this was the hardest earthquake yet, but nothing broke.
“Our house was shaken for two or three seconds. I was afraid that the windows would be broken,” Silvrvstein said.
The shaking lasted for a few seconds, and the kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, said Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen breakfast restaurant in Malibu.
“It wasn't that bad, thank God nothing fell,” Vasquez said.
People, including several celebrities, took to social media to post that they had been woken up by an earthquake.
“That earthquake was scary,” wrote hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton on X. Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian posted: “Oh my god, that was a big earthquake.”
Some residents said they received an alert from the state's earthquake early warning system.
The quake struck as the region was dealing with three major wildfires east of Los Angeles that have burned dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The fires broke out during a severe heat wave that has just subsided.
The area has been hit by a number of earthquakes in recent months, including a 4.4-magnitude quake in August that rattled residents of the Los Angeles and San Diego area, shaking buildings, knocking goods off shelves and setting off car alarms. The quake also caused a pipe to burst in Pasadena’s ornate 1927 City Hall.
In February, Malibu residents felt a 4.6 -magnitude earthquake south of an earthquake on Thursday.
Thursday’s event was the 14th magnitude-4.0 earthquake in Southern California this year. While that exceeds the average of eight to 10 quakes a year in recent decades, it’s too early to know whether the increased activity is statistically significant, said Jones, the Caltech seismologist. The previous high was 13 quakes of that magnitude in 1988.
