Los Angeles Area Hit by Earthquake Amid Raging Wildfires

The Los Angeles area has recently been devastated by multiple wildfires that have raged east of the city. The fires have destroyed thousands of acres of land and numerous buildings.

As if that and the heat wave weren't enough to deal with, a major earthquake has been reported.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Thursday morning. The epicenter was four miles north of Malibu and seven miles underground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In Orange County, about 45 miles away, the quake could be felt. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks, with people reporting objects in their homes shaking and moving.

There was good news as authorities in the area reported no major damage or injuries. Some rocks were thrown onto the Malibu freeway, while the Santa Monica Pier was seen shaking.

A live camera from the sidewalk showed intense shaking that lasted for several seconds, while news stations broadcast the quake live as equipment shook in the studio.

As Jamie Deng and Amy Taxin of the Associated Press reported, “The quake struck near the Malibu Fault, but it was also near the Anacapa Fault, according to seismologist Lucy Jones of the California Institute of Technology. Earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5.0 are too small to be conclusively linked to the larger faults that are mapped on the Earth’s surface.”

Malibu Councilman Bruce Silverstein has lived in the area for 13 years. Thursday morning's quake was the strongest he's ever felt, but nothing inside his home broke.

“Our house shook for about two or three seconds,” Silverstein said. “I was worried the windows were going to break.”

This is at least the 14th earthquake in 2024 felt in Southern California.

This is already the highest number of earthquakes of this magnitude ever recorded in the region, with the previous high being 13 in 1988. Jones said it was too early to know if this was more than an anomaly, and it was much higher than the average of eight to 10 earthquakes a year.

Just a few weeks earlier, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake had been recorded and felt from Los Angeles to San Diego. It caused a pipe to burst in the Pasadena City Hall in 1927.

Malibu was hit by a 4.6-magnitude earthquake in February, which was located south of Thursday's quake.
