NEW DELHI: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing to meet even one of the key demands raised by protesting junior doctors. Adhir accused Mamata of using “cunning tactics” to break the month-long protest that has left the state’s healthcare system in crisis. Criticising Banerjee’s recent visit to the protest site, Adhir said it was merely an act of political manoeuvring. “For the past few days, our students and children have been protesting on this issue. We had asked the chief minister to meet the protesters once but she did not meet them. When she (Mamata Banerjee) went to meet them but she did not leave her cunning behind,” Chowdhury said. The Congress leader went on to say that meeting even one of the five demands, such as removing the Kolkata police commissioner from his post, would not have caused an “earthquake”. He added that the chief minister’s refusal to concede to any of the demands was a deliberate tactic to break up the movement. “The PhD students have put forward their five demands. At least one of their demands should have been met. Had the Kolkata Police Commissioner been removed from his post, would there have been an earthquake? One tactic after another is being adopted in a planned manner to break the movement. What harm is there in meeting 2-4 of the five demands? That is Mamata Banerjee’s cunning. “She (Banerjee) should drop her cunning and talk to the students face to face, that is our demand,” he added. Since the August 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, junior doctors have been staging protests demanding better security and accountability. Amid the ongoing tensions, Mamata Banerjee made an unannounced visit to the protest site on Saturday, spoke to the agitating doctors and tried to reassure them that their concerns would be looked into. Speaking amid chants of “We want justice” outside Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Mamata, who referred to herself as “Didi” (elder sister), claimed to have lost sleep over the ongoing crisis. “This is my last attempt to resolve the situation,” she told the doctors, promising to review their demands and take action if any irregularities were found. She urged the doctors to return to work, vowing not to take any punitive action against them. “I will not take any action against you. This is not Uttar Pradesh. They have implemented the Securities and Exchange Act and stopped all kinds of strikes and protests. But rest assured, I will not do anything of the sort. I am against taking any action against doctors. I know you are doing a noble job. Seniors (doctors) need you. Consider my suggestion,” Mamata told the doctors. While the agitating doctors expressed their willingness to participate in the dialogue, they stuck to their stand that no concessions would be made until there were concrete discussions. “We welcome the prime minister’s gesture and are ready to sit down for talks,” said one of the protesting doctors. But we will not back down from our demands until proper dialogue takes place.” So far, the government’s efforts to hold talks have failed. Last week, doctors arrived for a scheduled meeting with Banerjee, only to have it abruptly cancelled after the government refused their request to broadcast the proceedings live.
