Earthquake shakes Los Angeles area as wildfires rage nearby

LOS ANGELES, Calif.: Southern Californians got another reminder of Mother Nature's power when they woke up this week to the sound of an earthquake, even as wildfires cast an orange glow over the downtown Los Angeles skyline.

Los Angeles residents woke up to a 4.7-magnitude earthquake that sent huge boulders crashing down a Malibu road, shaking the 1909 wooden Monica Pier and routing some people from their beds. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck as the region was already dealing with three major wildfires east of Los Angeles, which have burned dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered four miles north of Malibu and seven miles below the surface. The tremor was felt 45 miles away in Orange County, where people reported moving objects in their homes. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

Officials in the area said authorities were surveying the damage but had not found anything significant.

Malibu Councilman Bruce Silverstein said he has lived in the area for 13 years and this was the strongest quake yet, but nothing broke. He said his house shook for a few seconds.

A camera mounted on the 115-year-old Santa Monica Pier, about 12 miles from Malibu, captured intense shaking that lasted for several seconds during the quake. Several morning newscasts captured the quake live as cameras shook in television studios.

KTLA-TV reported that a crew was working to remove large rocks that had rolled down Malibu Canyon Road, near the epicenter of the quake.

The shaking lasted for a few seconds, and the kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, said Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen breakfast restaurant in Malibu.

At a Starbucks on the Malibu coast, surfer Albert Daniel was drinking coffee and wondering if the glass ceiling would collapse on him. Afterward, he hoped to see some big waves.

“That earthquake was scary,” wrote hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton on X. Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian posted: “Oh my god, that was a big earthquake.”

Some residents said they received an alert from the state's earthquake early warning system.

The area has been hit by a number of earthquakes in recent months, including a 4.4-magnitude quake in August that rattled residents of the Los Angeles and San Diego area, shaking buildings, knocking merchandise off shelves and setting off car alarms. The quake also caused a pipe to burst in Pasadena’s ornate 1927 City Hall.

The recent quakes don’t indicate whether a larger, more destructive quake is coming, but residents should brace for more aftershocks. There’s a 1 in 20 chance of another quake of magnitude 4.7 or higher, Morgan Page, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told the Los Angeles Times.
