Magnitude 4.3 quake hits near Kilauea summit Saturday, no tsunami threat: Big Island Now

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Kilauea summit area at 4:25 p.m. today, about 3.7 miles southwest of the volcano village on the Big Island and at a depth of about 0.2 miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said no tsunami was expected.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory issued a status report at 7 p.m. Saturday, stating that earthquake activity has increased in the Kilauea Fault Zone in the east-central region, near Makaupuhi Crater. Ground deformation patterns west of Puʻuʻōʻō indicate another intrusive event in this area.
Since 4 p.m., about 60 earthquakes have been recorded, with the intensity increasing near the Makaupuhi Crater.
“Currently, there are no signs of an imminent eruption; however, conditions could change rapidly,” according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. “Previous volcanic activity in this area of the upper to middle Kilauea rift zone typically occurred between Hi’akaa and Mauna’olo craters in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

The Kilauea Volcanic Alert Level/Aviation Color Code remains at Advisory/Yellow.
By 4:44 p.m. Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey had already received 66 “felt reports” of the 4.3-magnitude quake from across the Big Island, including four from within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where the summit is located and where the highest intensity was reported.
Others were from nearby Volcano, where 40 reports were filed, as well as Mountain View, Courtesytown, Hilo and Pepeco.
Nine and seven “felt reports” were filed from the vicinity of Mountain View and Hilo, respectively, with four or fewer reports from other locations.
The earthquake was initially reported to be 4.5 magnitude, but was revised to 4.3 magnitude shortly after.

If a strong earthquake is felt in your area, the Hawaii County Department of Civil Defense advises checking for any damage, including structural, gas, water and electrical utility damage.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency also issued an earthquake alert.
As with any earthquake, there is a risk of aftershocks.
Since the first quake, two subsequent 2.5-magnitude earthquakes have occurred at approximately the same location as the first quake, 3.7 miles south of the village of Volcano at depths of about 0.6 and 1.2 miles, respectively.

“I thought I was dizzy from working in the yard, but no! Earthquake!” Jennifer McCoy wrote in a comment on a post by Kathy Kitka in the Hawaii Tracker Facebook group at 4:41 p.m., about 20 minutes after the quake struck.
Kitka said the quake shook a chair and a display case in her home.
“Downtown Hilo, my porch was gently shaking,” Doreen Soran said.
Others in areas including Nanuali, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Leilani Estates and Kona said they felt nothing. Barbara Gola Profit said she “just felt a little shock.”
By 5:05 p.m., 40 minutes after the quake struck, there had been 86 “felt reports” submitted to the USGS, including from other locations such as Kailua-Kona, Papaikou, Naalehu, and Keahu.
The USGS rated the earthquake as V on the Modified Mercalli Scale of Seismic Intensity, with generally moderate shaking and the possibility of very little damage.
