Stuart Armstrong scores as Vancouver Whitecaps beat struggling San Jose Earthquakes

VANCOUVER — Stuart Armstrong scored his first Major League Soccer goal and the Vancouver Whitecaps continued their winning streak on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Fava Picault also scored for the Caps (13-8-6) and Ryan Gould contributed a pair of assists.

Vancouver are now unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions and sit fifth in MLS' Western Conference with less than a month left in the regular season.

The loss officially eliminated the last-place Earthquakes (5-21-2) from the postseason.

Whitecaps goalkeeper Yuhei Takaoka made two saves to keep his seventh clean sheet of the year, while Daniel made nine saves for the Quicks.

Vancouver was the dominant team from the start on Saturday and didn't back down throughout the game, outshooting the visitors 19-5 and controlling 54.1 per cent of possession.

The Caps came very close to scoring several times early Saturday.

Captain Gould curled a ball to Picault in the 22nd minute, and the Haitian striker headed the ball towards the net, but Daniel caught part of the shot with his forearm and pushed it out of harm's way.

Gould and Picault scored another goal in the 35th minute from a corner kick for Vancouver. Gould passed the ball to Picault, who jumped over the crowd and headed it past the San Jose goalkeeper for his ninth MLS goal of the season.

The home side came dangerously close to taking a 2-0 lead inside the dressing room when Pedro Vietti touched the ball to Gold at the top of the penalty area in the 45th minute. The Scottish attacking midfielder fired a powerful shot that went just over the bar.

Vancouver outscored the visitors 8-3 in the first half and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Early in the second half, the woodwork played a role of spoiler again when Picault's header hit the crossbar, denying Caps a two-goal lead in the 51st minute.

San Jose appeared to have leveled the score in the 68th minute when Ousseni Boda received the ball and fired it past Vancouver. An assistant referee quickly raised the offside flag and the goal was declared.

Daniel managed to keep San Jose's lead at one goal thanks to his strong saves in the 82nd minute.

First, the Brazilian goalkeeper dived off his line to keep out a powerful shot from CAPS midfielder Alessandro Schopf. Then he was tested again at the next corner, diving to divert a header from Picault over the bar.

Three minutes after coming on for Schopf, Armstrong gave Vancouver a two-goal lead in the 87th minute. Witt sent a short pass to Gould, who fed his compatriot Armstrong, who fired a powerful shot over the top of the net for his first Whitecaps goal.

The 32-year-old Scottish midfielder signed with Vancouver on September 3.
