Reports of unrest in Kilauea after 4.3 magnitude quake hits Middle East Rift Zone: Maui Now

USGS scientists made a routine visit to the summit of Kilauea to conduct webcam maintenance and general observations. The weather allowed for clear views of the summit caldera, and there was only minor outgassing from several points on the caldera floor. USGS photo by M. Patrick.

Seismic activity has increased in the rift zone east of Kilauea volcano, near Makaupuhi crater. Ground deformation patterns west of Pu'u'pu'uhi crater suggest another event may be occurring in this area, but scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say Kilauea is not erupting at this time.

Increased seismic activity began at about 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, in the area between the Pauahi and Makaupuhi craters. Since then, about 60 earthquakes have been recorded. At 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was reported in the Kilauea summit area, but authorities at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected.

Starting around 6 p.m. Saturday, ground deformation patterns west (top) of Puʻuʻōʻō began to show changes indicative of crack growth, indicating that another intrusive event may be occurring in this area (similar to events that occurred in this general area in July and August of this year).

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is closely monitoring the situation and will issue additional messages as needed. At this time, there are no signs of an imminent eruption; however, conditions may change quickly. Previous volcanic activity in this area of ​​the upper to middle Kilauea rift zone typically occurred between Hiiaka and Maunaolo craters in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Earthquake rates and ground deformation beneath the lower East Rift Zone and Southwest Rift Zone remain low. Current activity is limited to the upper to middle East Rift Zone of Kilauea.

The Kilauea Volcanic Alert Level/Aviation Color Code remains at Warning/Yellow.
