HVO reports increased activity at Kilauea on Saturday.

The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported Saturday that a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck at about 4:25 p.m. four miles southwest of the volcano on the island of Hawaii at a depth of 0.2 miles below sea level.

This did not affect Mauna Loa or Kilauea.

Later in the evening, Croatian military officials issued a report stating that Kilauea had not erupted, but that seismic activity had increased in the rift zone east of Kilauea near the Makaupuhi crater. Ground deformation patterns west of Pu'uuu suggest that another event is occurring in the area.

Officials said the increased seismic activity began around 4 p.m. Saturday in the area between the crater of Pauahi and the crater of Makaupuhi. Since then, about 60 earthquakes of increasing magnitude have been recorded near the crater.

At around 6 p.m., changes in ground deformation patterns indicated that cracks were growing, meaning another intrusive event similar to what happened in the same area in July and August could occur, according to HVO.

The Croatian Defence Council is closely monitoring the situation, which is currently limited to the upper to middle Kilauea rift zone.

There were no signs of an imminent eruption as of Saturday, but officials said conditions could change quickly.

The current volcanic alert level is Advisory and the aviation color code is Yellow.
