A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southern tip of Haida Gwaii in British Columbia on Sunday, followed by a series of aftershocks.

According to the Canadian Earthquake Centre, tremors were felt in Sandspit and Masset in the Haida Gwaii archipelago, parts of northern Vancouver Island including Port Hardy and Gold River, and as far as Terrace and Kitimat on the British Columbia mainland.

The National Weather Service in Hawaii says the Tsunami Warning Center has no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

Victoria seismologist John Cassidy of Natural Resources Canada said the seismic activity began earlier in the day, with the first magnitude 3.0 quake hitting at 2:37 p.m., followed by a magnitude 4.2 quake shortly after.

The main quake, which registered a magnitude of 6.4, struck at 3:22 p.m. about 200 kilometers south of Sandspit, British Columbia.

“It's one of the most seismically active areas in Canada,” Cassidy told CBC News, adding that while small earthquakes occur almost daily in the area, larger events like this landslide are less frequent.

He said the tremors were felt over a wide area, but the area hit by the quake is sparsely populated.

“The area is about 200 kilometres from any of the larger population centres. A few people living very close by were affected, and some things may have fallen off shelves,” the seismologist said.

Doug Nislus, the chief councillor for the Klemtu area, north of Bela Bela, said members of the community felt the tremors.

“Everything is normal, I just felt a little bit of vibration,” Nislus said.

Ben Wilson, food and beverage manager at Willows Golf Course in Sandspit, said he was at home on a break when he felt the ground shake, long enough to know what was causing the shaking, but not long enough to be alarming.

“This was definitely more pronounced than some of the others, but by no means the biggest I've ever felt here.”

Earthquakes Canada has warned that aftershocks are expected in the coming days.
