The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology Agency has reported a brief eruption at Kilauea Volcano; the alert level remains at “watch.”

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kilauea Volcano briefly erupted Sunday evening, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported.

Officials said the eruption occurred just west of Napa'u Crater in the Central Rift Zone of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park between 9 and 10 p.m.

Lava extended approximately 50 yards from the fissure openings. Nearby residents reported smelling volcanic gas and other odors at the time.

Croatian seismological agency officials said the eruption was now over, but the agency had earlier raised alert levels after increased seismic activity and gas emissions over the weekend.

The Air Defense Authority has raised the volcano alert level for ground hazards from “warning” to “caution”. The aviation color code has also been raised from “yellow” to “orange”.

The U.S. Geological Survey said “magma intrusion” began Sept. 14 on Kilauea's East-Middle Rift Zone, increasing the potential for an eruption. The current activity is occurring in a remote area of ​​the rift zone, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

“Severe, localized earthquakes between Maunaulu and Makaupuhi Crater, accompanied by ground deformation patterns that indicate the growth of underground cracks, began at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday,” the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Earthquake rates and ground deformation began to spike suddenly after 11 a.m. Monday, prompting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to close several areas in case of an eruption.

About 60 earthquakes were recorded in the area, the largest of which was 4.3 magnitude.

Scientists said infrasound instruments detected a strong signal Sunday evening indicating rising gas or steam, and seismometers in the Middle East Rift Zone recorded weak, continuous, low-frequency vibrations. But heavy rainfall makes it difficult to interpret the activity on Kilauea.

“In 2007, an intrusion into this area erupted a very small lava mass about the size of half a football field, so it is possible that a similar small eruption could have occurred undetected under these conditions. Numerous eruptions occurred in this area during the 1960s and 1970s, most lasting less than a day to about two weeks,” according to a USGS news release.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed its crater chain road due to increased gas emissions and volcanic unrest.

Park visitors are urged to plan ahead and check the park website for any closures or hazard alerts at www.nps.gov/hawaiivolcanoes.

Kilauea last erupted on June 3, four kilometers southwest of the Kilauea caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The eruption lasted only a few hours.
