Strongest earthquake in 2024 hits Romania, tremors reach Ukraine

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Romania, felt in Moldova and Ukraine's Odessa region, state governor Oleh Keper said.

Odessa region governor Oleh Kiper said the quake measured an estimated 2-4 on the intensity scale in the south of the Odessa region, with tremors also being felt in other parts of the region.

Kipper said the earthquake did not cause any damage.

The Romanian Institute of Geophysics described the earthquake as the “strongest” since the beginning of 2024, with tremors starting at a depth of 140 kilometers.

According to the Digi24 website, the earthquake was felt by residents of Bucharest, as well as residents of neighboring countries including Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. The tremors reached the city of Odessa, which is located about 340 kilometers from the epicenter.
