While it's normal for three earthquakes of magnitude 3.4 or greater to occur in a short period of time in the same areas — like the Malibu earthquakes in the past five days — it's not normal for Southern California to have fewer earthquakes than it did, Dr. Lucy Jones said Monday.

“We have to remember that the quiet of the last 25 years is not the long-term pattern for Southern California,” the seismologist said during NBC4 News' 4 p.m. program Monday. “We have to get used to having more of what we've seen recently.”

Young people who weren't around during the 1994 Northridge earthquake or those who are new to Southern California shouldn't be too comfortable with the recent frequency of quakes, Jones said.

“It's a good reminder that earthquakes are part of our environment,” Jones said. “That's why we need to be prepared to experience larger earthquakes as well — Southern California is so beautiful.”

To prepare for the next major disaster, Jones said the first step is to talk to family members and loved ones about a plan.

“You have to have a communication plan. If an earthquake happens while your kids are at school, do you know what they're going to do? Do you know what you're going to do about it? Do you know when you can reach them?” Jones said.

She also urged parents to talk to teens and children about connecting to a mobile network in case there is no signal after a major earthquake.

“Having a plan, planning to use texting instead of phone calls when the system is overwhelmed — all of those things are really important,” Jones explained.

“Water is probably the most important thing,” Jones said, explaining that water systems are the weakest part of the state’s infrastructure and are most likely to suffer severe damage after a disaster like a major earthquake.

“FEMA will provide water after we lose the water system. But do you want to spend hours standing in line every day to get the water your family needs? Probably not.”
