SOUR Unveils Community Rehabilitation Project in Hatay Province After Earthquake in Türkiye

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck central Turkey and northwestern Syria in February 2023, Turkey’s Hatay province saw large parts of its urban fabric destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. The Turkish Design Council commissioned design studio SOUR to contribute to the regeneration initiative as part of a broader design-led revitalization process.

The office’s approach focused on community-led design. The process began in October 2023 with ethnographic research in the cities of Antakya, Samandag, Sirinyol, and Defneharbiye. Interviews were conducted with local residents from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to assess community needs and initiate the co-design process through initial ideas and reactions to the concept. This study was conducted in partnership with psychologists, anthropologists, and trauma specialists to ensure responsible and trauma-informed practice.

The study resulted in a set of design principles that would guide the development process. The findings of this research were compiled into a detailed report and documentary, which shaped the subsequent phases of the project and the overall master plan. The design process continued under the guidance of a joint committee of experts with diverse life and professional experiences, ensuring real results for the communities involved.

The SOUR development covers an area of 76,108 square meters, including residential units, commercial and retail spaces, as well as landscaping interventions. According to SOUR, the project is guided by several principles: creating a sense of security, promoting well-being and ensuring permeable transitions through transitional spaces. The project also takes into account changes in time, while also seeking to connect the past, present and future to create a sense of belonging.

The project demonstrates a new approach to post-disaster urban regeneration that prioritizes the human element in design and seeks to reintegrate the lived experiences of city dwellers into design solutions, an approach that hopes to help not only rebuild the urban fabric but also help communities recover and become more resilient. Similarly, Foster+ Partners, in collaboration with Buro Happold, MIC-HUB, DB Architects and the KEYM Center for Urban Regeneration, has unveiled a master plan for the revitalization of Antakya and the wider Hatay province in Turkey.
