Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Midland, Texas, Thousands Report Shaking

A rare strong earthquake struck near Midland, Texas, on Monday evening, prompting more than 1,000 reports of shaking, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, initially measured at 5.1 magnitude, struck at 7:49 p.m. local time at a depth of about five miles below the surface, about 21 miles west-southwest of Ackerley, the agency said.

No injuries were initially reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey received more than 1,400 reports of the quake. People as far away as Fort Worth, 282 miles east, and Austin, 322 miles southeast, reported feeling the quake.

Earthquakes east of the Rockies are typically felt at greater distances and cause more damage even if their magnitudes are similar, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a summary of recent geological activity in the region.

“Earthquakes east of the Rockies that are concentrated in populated areas and large enough to cause damage are also more likely to cause damage at greater distances than earthquakes of the same magnitude that are concentrated in western North America,” the report added.

Ackerley is located about 60 miles north of Midland. The area is known for hydraulic fracturing, a process in which high-pressure water is injected into the ground to extract oil.

“There is evidence that some earthquakes in central and eastern North America were caused by human activities that changed stress conditions in the Earth's crust enough to trigger faulting,” the USGS said in its analysis of the region.

But no link has been proven between the hydraulic fracturing process and the earthquake that struck the area on Monday.

The USGS says hydraulic fracturing can be linked to a small percentage of earthquakes, and that more of these earthquakes can be attributed to wastewater disposal.
