Could an earthquake strike Central Texas? Local experts warn

Although San Angelo may be 200 miles from Central Texas, University of Texas at Austin geology professor Matt Bangs says Central Texas may not be immune when it comes to earthquakes.

“Earthquakes are caused by a build-up of huge stresses deep within the Earth,” Bangs said.

During an earthquake, Bangs says, subdivisions of the Earth become like a rubber band—the more stress is applied during stretching, the more likely it is to slip and break.

“When that happens, it can raise fluid pressures and change the stresses of the rocks,” he said.

The professor says that water and other liquids play a major role in causing earthquakes.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says Texas is the nation's largest source of natural gas, accounting for 43 percent of the nation's crude oil and 27 percent of its natural gas.

This in turn means more hydraulic fracturing in the state.

During hydraulic fracturing, wastewater is pulled out of the ground and forced back in, creating more pressure, which in turn, Bangs says, can lead to more vibrations.

“Some of these processes can be important, but it's not necessarily easy to predict cause and effect,” he said.

As for whether Central Texas is built to withstand earthquakes, 25 News spoke with the city of Waycow's emergency management coordinator, Ryan Dirker, who says that while Waycow may not be an active earthquake zone, his team is well-equipped for any situation.

“Modern construction techniques have come a long way, and we will be stable in almost any situation beyond any type of strong earthquake that might occur in Central Texas,” Dirker said.
