One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Texas struck parts of West Texas on Monday evening. The powerful 5.1-magnitude quake was felt as far away as Central Texas.

A powerful 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Ackerley, near Midland, Texas. It was ranked among the five largest earthquakes in Texas history.

TEXAS – One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Texas struck parts of West Texas on Monday evening.

Even here in central Texas, the powerful 5.1 magnitude earthquake was felt.

“I was looking at everything and saying, ‘This is real, this is not like a hallucination, this is really happening,’” says Risa Sher, who felt the impact of the earthquake.

On Monday, September 16, at about 7:49 p.m., a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the town of Ackerley near Midland, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake's effects were felt as far north as Austin.

“I was sitting in bed watching TV. I was sitting upright, and then I started to notice something happening. I started to hear something. I live in an apartment. I'm on the third floor, so I have neighbors upstairs and downstairs, and I started to hear something like a knock on the door. I said, 'Okay, that's a neighbor,'” Sher says.

The confirmed earthquake was rated as moderate and is considered among the five largest earthquakes in Texas history.

“I realized my bed was rocking back and forth, and I heard knocking. I felt it, and I said, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’” Sher says.

The US Geological Survey says it has received more than 1,400 reports from Texas residents saying they felt the shock and shaking.

Many people have taken to social media to express their concerns and see if others have been affected.

“I know this isn't very common here, so it's obviously caused a stir online,” Sher says.

Moderate earthquakes are known to occur about 1,500 times a year and can cause property damage, according to the FOX 7 weather team in Austin.

“It was a first for me, and it probably only took 10 or 15 seconds, but it was definitely enough to feel something,” Sher says.

The earthquake's depth was 7.9 km, and no damage or injuries were reported.
