Explosion from Russian arms depot attack detected on seismic monitors | Ukraine

A Ukrainian drone attack on a major Russian arms depot triggered an explosion that was picked up by seismic stations, in one of the biggest blows to Moscow's military arsenal since the war began.

Pro-Russian military bloggers said Ukraine struck an arsenal storing missiles, ammunition and explosives in Toropets, a historic town more than 300 miles north of Ukraine and about 230 miles west of Moscow.

Videos and photos on social media showed a huge ball of fire rising high into the night sky and loud explosions across a lake, not far from the border with Belarus.

The strike was part of a broader drone campaign in Ukraine targeting Russian oil refineries, power plants, airports and military factories, and highlights Kyiv's improving long-range drone capabilities.

Seismic monitoring stations recorded what sensors believed to be a small earthquake in the area.

The Ukrainian newspaper Pravda reported that the operation was carried out by the Ukrainian security services in cooperation with the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service and special operations forces. An unnamed official in the Ukrainian Security Service said that the weapons depot contained long-range Russian missiles and guided bombs known as “KAB”.

The Russian Defense Ministry said 54 Ukrainian drones targeted five regions in western Russia overnight and all were destroyed.

In an implicit acknowledgement of the strike, Igor Rodinia, governor of Russia's Tver region, said firefighters there were trying to contain a blaze and some residents had been evacuated from their homes.

Rodinia said the wreckage of a downed Ukrainian drone caused the fire, but did not say what was burning.

Nurseries and schools in the Zapadnodvinsk district, adjacent to the Toropetsk district in the Tver region, were closed on Wednesday, Russian state media reported.

Some pro-war Russian war bloggers expressed outrage that Ukrainian drones were able to cause such massive explosions in what was believed to be a heavily fortified facility.

In a scathing statement on Telegram, Anastasia Kashevarova, a well-connected and influential blogger, blamed the Russian Defense Ministry and authorities for allowing Ukraine to “blow up a huge military warehouse.”

She wrote: “How many more mistakes can they make… It's the third year of the special military operation and the stupidity continues.”

The Ukrainian strike using domestically-made drones comes amid ongoing efforts by Volodymyr Zelensky to persuade his allies to allow Kyiv to use Western-supplied missiles against air bases and weapons depots on Russian territory, to curb Moscow's steady advance in eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv's allies, including the United States and Britain, are debating whether to allow Kyiv to strike deep into Russian territory using missiles including the long-range U.S. ATACMS missiles and the Anglo-French Storm Shadows, known in France as SCALP.

The Kremlin has said such a move would mean direct Western intervention in the conflict and would have consequences, with some officials close to Vladimir Putin suggesting Moscow could respond with nuclear weapons.

Since the beginning of this year, Russian forces have made steady advances in eastern Ukraine, steadily approaching the key city of Pokrovsk.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian military claimed to have taken control of the city of Ukrainsk, which lies between Pokrovsk and Kurakhov, another Ukrainian military stronghold.
