Missouri to Participate in Earthquake Drills on October 17

Texas county organizations will be among those participating in this year's Great Central US ShakeOut, as Missouri is located in one of the most active earthquake zones in the country.

The event takes place on Thursday, October 17. Missouri is one of 14 participating states in the central United States affected by the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

“Missouri is home to a very large and active earthquake zone,” said Jim Remillard, director of the state’s Emergency Management Agency. “Earthquakes happen without warning, so it’s important to prepare now. ShakeOut drills are a great opportunity to practice so you know what to do when an earthquake starts.”

At 10:17 a.m. on October 17, hundreds of thousands of Missourians will practice the “drop, cover, and hold” technique:

• Get on your hands and knees.

• Cover your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can.

•Continue until the vibration stops.

Studies show that in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of injury in an earthquake. Experts advise that when an earthquake occurs in the United States, the “drop, cover, and hold” technique is the best protection from falling debris.

To register for ShakeOut, register online at www.shakeout.org/centralus. Schools, businesses, community organizations, or any other group can register, in addition to families and individuals. Once registered, participants will receive regular updates on training and information about earthquake preparedness and safety.

In 1811 and 1812, the New Madrid earthquake zone produced some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history, and seismologists agree that similar quakes remain a threat to this day. The tremors from another major quake in this area would not only be felt in Missourians, but throughout the Midwest, damaging much of the southern and eastern parts of the state, including the St. Louis metropolitan area.
