Earthquake hits Moldova during president's live speech

Moldovan President Maia Sandu's real-time reaction to an earthquake when tremors were felt during a live TV interview in Romania has been immortalized.

While she was talking about her activities next week on the Moldovan current affairs programme Ultima Ora, the studio felt the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that shook Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine.

“Oh my God, something interesting is happening here. Live premiere, earthquake,” the presenter said, according to Reuters.

Sandhu responded to the studio shake by widening her eyes and telling the host: “It seems like it is, yeah.”

Sandhu also reportedly agreed with the broadcaster that the interview had an “unusual ending”.

Newsweek contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova for comment via email.

Footage of the moment was posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, where it quickly went viral, garnering more than 420,000 views and nearly 4,000 likes.

Many users in the comments section praised Sando and the host for staying calm while experiencing the earthquake tremors live.

“Nothing shakes these two women, fear is faced with elegance and a smile on their faces,” wrote one user, Carlos, on X.

Another user, Shadow Fox, wrote, “Oh, I love President Sandu so much! He was so calm during an unexpected earthquake! He's so presidential! Moldova is lucky!”

Reuters reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Vrancea County of Romania, which borders Moldova, and did not cause any damage. Moldova has a population of about 2.42 million people, and is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south.

Residents of the Romanian capital Bucharest, as well as eastern Romania, felt the moderate earthquake, according to the Romania Insider website.

The agency said the earthquake was the strongest recorded in the Francia seismic zone since 2022.

Sandu, 52, has been Moldova's president since 2020, the Eastern European country's first female president. She has been integral to leading Moldova's push for European Union membership, Newsweek previously reported.

She has been highly critical of Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and has expressed concerns about Russia's attack on Moldova, Newsweek previously reported.
