4.9 magnitude earthquake hits Bandung; Malaysian Meteorological Agency records 5 aftershocks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a tectonic earthquake struck the Bandung area, West Java, on Wednesday morning, September 18, 2024, at 9:41 am Western Indonesia Time.

The agency has updated its analysis of the magnitude of the quake to 4.9. The epicenter was at 7.23 degrees south and 107.65 degrees east, exactly 25 kilometers southeast of Bandung, and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

“Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the epicentre, the earthquake was shallow due to the activity of the Garsila Fault,” Daryono, head of the Indonesian Meteorology and Climatology Agency's earthquake and tsunami center, said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Source mechanism analysis indicates that the earthquake has a downward shear (oblique vertical) motion,” he added.

The tremor was felt in the Majalaya area with an intensity scale ranging from III to IV MMI, meaning that many people who were indoors felt it during the day. Weaker intensity was reported in Banjaran at III MMI and in Lembang, Barumpung, West Bandung, Balindah, Garut and Selioni at II-III MMI.

BMKG models concluded that this earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. By 10:10 a.m. WPT, the agency had recorded five aftershocks, the largest of which measured 3.1 magnitude.
