Federal Government assures residents that Abuja tremors are not related to earthquake

The federal government on Wednesday urged residents of Mbabi and other suburbs affected by recent earthquakes not to panic.

The government confirmed that moderate seismic movements have no direct relation to earthquakes.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

The tremors, which occurred two days ago, caused confusion among residents of Mbabi, Maitama and other suburbs, with between six and eight seismic movements reported.

But Adepoju insisted that people in the area should avoid panic, saying the situation was under control.

The space scientist also revealed that quarry workers and excavators working in the affected areas have been ordered to suspend their activities.

“We are not at the panic stage yet. We want to reassure the people of Mbape and Abuja that the tremors we have experienced are not of the type that can cause earthquakes. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates,” he said.

“Again, earthquakes are not limited to Nigeria. They are a global phenomenon. Unlike the tsunami that occurred in the Asia-Pacific region, the tremors we are experiencing here are minor and not related to earthquakes.

“As for drilling, mining and rock blasting, we have learned from reliable sources that these activities have been halted in the affected areas. This is a commendable move by the Federal Capital Territory administration and we encourage them to continue to prevent the aggravation of seismic activities. Human activities can indeed affect seismic conditions.”

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, expressed similar sentiments, saying all efforts were being made to avert any disaster.

“Many may recall that the Mbappe area experienced a similar series of earthquakes from September 5 to 7, 2018, which drew significant local and international attention to the increasing seismic activity in Nigeria. The recent tremors were accompanied by loud noises and ground shaking, causing widespread panic among the residents of Mbappe.

“In response, the government is currently processing and analysing comprehensive data sets from seismic monitoring stations and Global Positioning System (GNSS) to make relevant recommendations to the Federal Capital Territory administration.

“We urge residents of the Mbape area, and by extension the wider Abuja area, to remain calm and continue with their normal activities. The National Search and Rescue Agency is closely monitoring the situation and will soon implement seismic risk mitigation measures,” Nnaji stressed.
