Bandung earthquake losses exceed Rp385 billion, 21,000 people affected

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the 4.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Bandung, Garut and surrounding areas on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, caused a total loss of Rp 385,017,956,250. The damage mainly affected hundreds of residential houses and dozens of public facilities.

As of Thursday, September 19, 2024, 08:00 WIB, data revealed that Bandung suffered the most damage, with 532 buildings severely affected. In addition, 8 health facilities, 31 education units and 55 places of worship were reported to have been damaged.

While the Garut area did not witness any major damage to buildings, the number of damaged buildings reached 1,195.

The West Java Disaster Management Agency said the sudden earthquake affected a total of 21,709 people in Bandung, West Bandung, Purwokarta and Bogor. Of these, 710 people were displaced, 83 were injured and one person tragically died.

The earthquake occurred at 9:41 am IST, had its epicentre on the ground and was caused by activity on the South Garut Fault or Garsila Fault.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said three more earthquakes were felt in Bandung and Garut provinces after the initial 4.9-magnitude quake. The aftershocks, with magnitudes of 3.2, 3.5 and 3.1, occurred at 9:48, 12:27 and 14:56 WIB, respectively. The epicenters of these quakes remained in the same area as the original quake, 24 kilometers southeast of Bandung province.
