Small earthquake in St. Louis on Thursday, could more follow?

Residents of St. Charles, Missouri, may have woken up early Thursday morning, as a small earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale struck around 3:30 a.m.

While Thursday's earthquake was not a problem, the question remains: “When will the next big one hit?”

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake might feel like a large truck passing or a distant clap of thunder. It’s less than a minor earthquake. And while Thursday’s quake was the first in St. Louis this week, the New Madrid seismic zone has been hit by 10 earthquakes this week.

For decades, the New Madrid Fault has been the subject of debate about when the next big earthquake would occur. In 1990, a scientist claimed to have pinpointed the day—December 10, 1990—when a major earthquake would hit New Madrid, Missouri. Reporters camped out, T-shirts were sold, and people were left waiting for something that never happened.

The 1990 earthquake didn't happen, but that doesn't mean a major one hasn't hit the Bothell area. In 1811, one of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history was centered in New Madrid, Missouri.

The earthquake of 1811 was so powerful that it caused the Mississippi River to flow backward and red clay volcanoes to erupt from the ground.

Given the history of the New Madrid Fault and current activity, the State of Missouri urges people to stay aware. Registration is now open for the 2024 Great Central U.S. Earthquake Training.

The Missouri ShakeOut will take place at 10:17 a.m. on October 17, 2024. Missouri is one of 14 participating states.
