Missouri ShakeOut Earthquake Drill to Begin October 17 – Newstalk KZRG

JEFFERSON CITY – Many people know the southeastern region of the state as the Boothills of Missouri, but did you know it's also located at the epicenter of one of the most active earthquake zones in the country?

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is more than 100 miles wide and experiences an average of more than 200 small earthquakes per year.

In preparation for any future earthquakes, registration is now open for the 2024 Great Central US ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, October 17. Missouri is one of 14 participating states in the central US that could be impacted by an NMSZ earthquake.

“Missouri is home to a very large and active earthquake zone,” said Jim Remillard, director of the state’s Emergency Management Agency. “Earthquakes happen without warning, so it’s important to prepare now. ShakeOut drills are a great opportunity to practice so you know what to do when an earthquake starts.”

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) stretches over 100 miles and averages over 200 small earthquakes per year.

In preparation for any future earthquakes, more than 260,000 Missourians have already registered for the annual “Drop, Protect, Hold” drill.

At 10:17 a.m. on October 17, hundreds of thousands of Missourians will practice the “drop, cover, and hold” technique:

Get down on your hands and knees; cover your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can; and hold on until the shaking stops.

Studies show that in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of injury in an earthquake. Experts advise that when an earthquake occurs in the United States, the “drop, cover, and hold” technique is the best protection from falling debris.

To register for ShakeOut, register online at www.shakeout.org/centralus. Schools, businesses, community organizations, or any other group can register, in addition to families and individuals. Once registered, participants will receive regular updates on training and information about earthquake preparedness and safety.

In 1811 and 1812, the NMSZ generated some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history, and seismologists agree that similar quakes remain a danger today. The shaking from another major earthquake in this area would be felt not only in Missouri but throughout the Midwest, damaging much of the southern and eastern parts of the state, including the St. Louis metropolitan area.
