4.5 magnitude earthquake hits Kemerovo region in Siberia

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Kemerovo region of Siberia on Thursday night, according to the Russian Seismological Center.

The quake struck around midnight local time, with a magnitude of 5.8 at its epi Videos circulating on social media showed damage to apartments, with tiles falling off walls and parts of ceilings collapsing.

Despite the damage, the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry confirmed that there were no human casualties or injuries. Authorities are currently examining buildings damaged by the earthquake.

Kemerovo, also known as Kuzbass, is a major coal mining region, where intense mining activity can sometimes trigger man-made earthquakes. Authorities said about 160 miners working at the Sheregesh mine were safely evacuated following the quake.

Last month, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, an area prone to seismic activity because of its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
