A school in southwest Virginia reopened after it was destroyed by an earthquake at the weekend

Independence, Virginia – A school district in southwest Virginia has postponed its start, though not due to COVID-19.

Three schools in Grayson County were damaged by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake Sunday in Sparta, North Carolina.

Exactly what repairs, if any, will ultimately be made to the cracks at Al Istiqlal Primary School, which received the most damage from the earthquake, have yet to be determined Monday, but fortunately, according to the structural engineer, the school is safe with cracks as she.

Grayson County School Principal Kelly Wilmore was in a school on Sunday when the earthquake struck.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Wilmore.

While surveying the damage, he wasn’t too concerned that the damaged schools would not be usable, but due to the potential for aftershocks, school leaders decided to start classes on August 18 instead of August 13.

“All we can do is go forward. We need to go back to school, we need to get our kids back to school. I’ll do what we have to do,” Wilmore said.

A somewhat uncertain school year due to the coronavirus pandemic has a shaky start.

Wilmore said the insurance and possibly some money from FEMA would be used to pay for any repairs.

The other two schools in the governorate that were hit by earthquake faults were still under evaluation as of late Monday afternoon.
