Thousands feared after loud explosions heard in Salt Lake Valley

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah — Thousands of people were left terrified Thursday afternoon after a series of explosions were heard throughout the Salt Lake Valley, rattling windows and scaring pets.

The Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center said it received 1,384 total 911 calls over a 20-minute period during the explosions as the Army Depot in Tooele was disposing of expired military munitions from the blasts.

Tyrone Smith was sitting in his Cottonwood Heights home when he heard explosions.

“All of a sudden, a huge bang shook the whole complex,” he said. “I thought it was the new neighbors because they had moved upstairs, so I thought they might have dropped something.”

When Smith came out, he realized it was some kind of explosion.

“There was nothing to worry about, nothing fell from the sky. It wasn't an earthquake. I'm from California, so I know what an earthquake is,” he said.

But Carissa Pascua felt real fear.

“It was scary after the second incident,” she said. “I felt like this wasn't normal. I thought someone might be breaking into the house.”

Pascua's dogs were scared too.

“They went crazy, and started crying,” Pasqua said. “That was also a big concern for me, because they don’t usually make a lot of noise unless something suspicious is going on.”

Pasqua believes the Tooele Army Depot should have alerted people when they were planning to bomb. Officials apologized Thursday afternoon for the lack of warning, saying they would do better in the future.

“I certainly think a simple warning would have been enough,” Pasqua said. “Minds can go crazy.”

Smith sees no problem with the military just doing its job.

“The military has its reasons for doing what it does,” he said. “We are facing a major conflict everywhere, so the military cannot say, 'Okay, we will do this and that,' because then it tells everyone what we are doing.”

Although he was a little nervous, Smith never felt anxious.

“Nothing happened, I'm fine, the dog's fine, everything's fine,” Smith said.
