VFW in Sparta is likely a total loss after the earthquake

Sparta Mayor Wes Bringar said VFW is likely a total loss. It is one of about 100 buildings damaged by Sunday’s earthquake.

His destruction prompted Mayor of Sparta, Wed Brennegar, to tears.

“It’s very moving for us because of the veterans who have served the country,” he said. “A lot of veterans are feeling a lot of pain now, it’s just a sad and sad day.”

He said that seeing images of heroes on the floor among shattered glass is more painful than seeing cracks in the foundation, holes in the ceiling, or plates of thousands of pieces.

“We have one crack in the wall here that might be close to an inch wide,” said Jared Adkins, Post Commander at VFW 7034. “You can see daylight from the inside where the walls just split off at a corner.”

“It is likely that the VFW will be a total loss,” the mayor added. “I don’t see a lot of repairs there, the foundation is cracked, the roofs are all collapsed in a lot of souvenirs.”

But the mayor wants to focus on the good.

“I had to say thank you to my countrymen and my boycott, what an amazing group of 11,000 strong people,” he said as he began to choke. “It’s very emotional, we’re all family, everyone knows everyone here. It’s one big family. We’ll take care of each other and we’ll get through it.”

The mayor said 3-4 homes had essentially slipped off their foundations, and that could be complete losses. The Red Cross helps these families.

In all, around 100 buildings, homes and churches were damaged.

“The majority of the damage is extensive, but it is minor and most of it is structural,” he said. “I’m talking foundations, chimneys, roofs, walkways, roads with 2-3 inch cracks.”

The mayor said the way this earthquake gathered the local community warms his heart.

“We are a steadfast people here and I am very proud to be the mayor of this city,” he said.

“These people are meeting, all these volunteers are checking people, neighbors are helping the neighbors, that’s all here.”
