At least one person has been killed and tens of thousands evacuated in central Japan as record-breaking rains hit the Noto Peninsula, which has barely recovered from a devastating earthquake, authorities said Saturday.

The situation worsened after at least 12 rivers burst their banks on Saturday and poured into streets of cities in Ishikawa Prefecture, said Masaru Kojima, a land ministry official.

At least one person was killed, two injured and three missing in Ishikawa, the regional government said. Local media reported that two of the missing were swept away by the river's strong currents.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the city of Wajima in Ishikawa saw a record 318.5 mm of rain from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon, including 121 mm on Saturday morning alone, prompting officials to order the evacuation of about 45,000 residents.

The agency issued the highest level of heavy rain warning for Ishikawa Prefecture, including the city of Wajima.

The nearby city of Suzhou saw 84.5mm of rain in one hour on Saturday morning and 226mm in total since Friday evening, a record for the region.

Japanese television channels showed floodwaters flowing into the streets of Wajima, turning into rivers and submerging cars in their path.

The rains also caused landslides in the region, which was already reeling from the aftermath of a powerful earthquake in January that killed more than 370 people, destroyed public infrastructure, and disrupted local industry and the economy.

The Meteorological Agency forecast up to 20 cm of rain in Ishikawa over the next 24 hours. The nearby northern prefectures of Niigata and Yamagata were also warned of flooding risks after heavy rains.

“Heavy rains are hitting the area that was severely affected by the Noto earthquake, and I think many people are feeling very anxious,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said.

Hayashi said the government was “putting people's lives first” and its priority was to conduct search and rescue operations.

He called on citizens in the affected areas to pay attention to the latest weather warnings, evacuate and take necessary precautions, adding that the military had been dispatched to Ishikawa to assist in rescue work.
