Magnitude 3.0 earthquake hits Malibu, latest in series of tremors to hit region

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck north of Malibu Saturday afternoon, the latest in a series of quakes reported over the past week and a half.

The latest quake struck at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, with its epicenter along Canaan Dome Road, about 3.6 miles north of Point Dume.

Saturday's quake was the sixth of a magnitude 3 or greater since a 4.7-magnitude quake in the same area that was widely felt across Southern California on Sept. 12.

Only a slight tremor was felt in the area closest to the epicenter of Saturday’s quake, which included Zuma Beach and Point Dume State Beach in Malibu, as measured by the Modified Mercalli Scale of Earthquake Intensity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor was so mild that many people didn’t realize it was an earthquake. If they did, the shaking they felt might have been similar to a truck passing by.

This year has been unusually active for moderate earthquakes in Southern California. The Sept. 12 quake north of Malibu was part of the 14th such earthquake this year in Southern California with at least one quake of magnitude 4 or higher, seismologist Lucy Jones, a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology, reported earlier this month.

That record has been broken for the past 65 years. During that time period, Jones said, the average number of independent earthquakes that occurred each year was between eight and 10, with at least one of them being magnitude 4 or greater.

In some years, there were only one or two such earthquakes in a row; the previous highest count was 13 in 1988.

Scientists said this observation is not necessarily an indication that a major, devastating earthquake is looming.

Some researchers have offered conflicting theories, with some saying that earthquake activity increases in an area before a major earthquake, while others say that earthquake activity decreases before a major tremor.

So the recent activity offers no hint of when the next big, devastating quake might strike, Susan Hogg, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said earlier this month.
