Did a real earthquake occur during the trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez?
I read somewhere that if you want the truth to be hidden from everyone, you should make a movie about it. I can’t remember who said it exactly, but after watching the Monsters series, I’m pretty sure it was directed at “artists” like Ryan Murphy. Before the second season came out on Netflix, I watched a bunch of documentaries, trial videos, and read a few books about the Menendez murders, and to be honest, I had mixed feelings about the entire case. I wasn’t sure if the brothers were lying or not. I was hoping that Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series would help me get some answers to the questions raised by the bizarre case, but it left me even more confused. It was as if the creators of the series put all the real-life events, rumors, gossip, and hearsay into a blender and made a juice that not only tasted bitter, but also smelled awful. There were a number of events surrounding the case that seemed ridiculous but actually happened, such as the earthquake that struck the San Fernando Valley, California, in 1994. In real life, legal experts believed that these life-threatening tremors could have had an impact on the trial, but we saw nothing of the sort in the Netflix series. Okay, it subtly highlighted Leslie Abramson’s workaholic nature and heightened Dominick Dunne’s fears, but nothing more.
In the series, we saw the first earthquake in Episode 8, also titled “Seismic Shifts.” On January 17, 1994, the boys, who were being held in different blocks of the Los Angeles County Central Men’s Jail, felt terrifying tremors in their cells. In real life, a similar earthquake, called the 1994 Northridge earthquake, occurred in California at around 4:30 a.m. and lasted for about eight seconds. It was reportedly the largest earthquake in the area since 1971. At that moment, when most people were running for their lives, Abramson, concerned for her clients, quickly called the county jail to inquire about their safety. The series also established that Abramson was obsessed with the Menendez brothers’ case and was more concerned about their safety than her own and her family’s. As journalist Robert Rand noted in his book The Menendez Murders, Lyle, the eldest brother, fell out of bed during the earthquake and injured his arm. The boys were even locked in their cell for three days without showers due to a lack of prison staff, as the earthquake caused extensive damage to highways and other public transportation. In his book, Rand also suggests subtly that the earthquake may have had a psychological effect on the jury, but in special cases like this, we can only assume that.
The 1994 earthquake not only killed 57 people (figures may vary) in its aftermath, but it also caused massive damage to personal and public property. On January 17, a hearing for the Menendez case was held at the Van Nuys courthouse, which was delayed due to the earthquake. The tremors caused extensive damage to the sixth and seventh floors of the courthouse, causing the hearings to be postponed due to safety concerns. Court officials thought they would be able to resume hearings on Thursday, but several of the jurors assigned to the case shared their concerns with authorities and told them they were not ready to return. But before we proceed, I want to point out some drastic changes to the real-life events in the series. According to the series, the first trial was still underway when a massive earthquake struck Los Angeles. However, according to real-life events, Eric’s first trial ended in a deadlock on January 13, four days before the earthquake struck. However, the jury in Lyle’s case was unable to discuss its verdict due to the earthquake in the valley, and so his fate was not announced until January 25, about 24 days after the closing statements were made. In the Netflix series, the verdict in the first trial came much later. Throughout this time, we also witnessed aftershocks that were supposed to have a psychological effect on the jury and everyone involved in the case. According to reports, more than three thousand aftershocks were recorded in the area following the earthquake. After both cases ended as mistrials, the District Attorney’s Office began preparing for a retrial that was originally scheduled for February 28, 1995, but did not begin until late August of that year.
The damage to the Van Nuys courthouse also set off a series of disputes during the second trial between the prosecutor and defense attorneys. The prosecutor asked the judge to move the brothers’ retrial to downtown Los Angeles because the previous courthouse was unable to handle such a high-profile case. Abramson, however, opposed the request because the new location would inevitably affect jury selection. The downtown area was home to more working-class gentry who might not have shown any sympathy for the boys’ plight. Abramson wanted the jury to be made up of suburban residents like the previous trial, who were more sensitive to the boys’ story of emotional trauma and sexual abuse. According to media reports, several pre-arraignment hearings were held in Santa Monica, but the trial was eventually moved to Van Nuys after necessary repairs were made to the courthouse. But even after this dispute over the location of the retrial, the boys failed to convince the jury of their true motives for committing such heinous crimes, and they were ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. So far, two new pieces of evidence have emerged, and the boys, with the help of their attorney, Cliff Gardner, are preparing for a new hearing if the court accepts their requests.
