(CNN) – Unprecedented torrential rains have caused deadly flooding and landslides in a coastal region of Japan still recovering from a devastating earthquake on New Year's Day.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest emergency warning for Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, urging residents to take maximum precautions in what it said was the heaviest rainfall ever to hit the region.

Heavy rains caused 16 rivers in the region to overflow their banks, NHK reported.

At least six people were killed, several were missing and tens of thousands of residents were forced to evacuate, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported, citing local authorities.

One person was killed in the city of Suzu after a landslide swallowed his house, NHK reported. In the city of Wajima, two bodies were found near a tunnel after a landslide, and two women were found dead in a house also affected by landslides. The NHK added that a man pulled from a river was also confirmed dead.

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said four workers involved in restoration work in quake-hit areas in the city of Wajima were missing and may have been caught in a landslide.

The storm also cut power to more than 6,200 homes, according to authorities.

Ishikawa suffered devastation and misery on January 1, when a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, killing hundreds of people and causing widespread destruction.

Images showed temporary housing built for people who lost their homes in the quake surrounded by several feet of muddy floodwater over the weekend. Earthquakes destabilize the soil and increase the risk of further landslides, especially after heavy rains.

The weather agency lowered the warning level on Sunday, but asked residents to remain on high alert.
