Tsunami warnings for remote islands after undersea quake

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning this morning for remote islands south of Tokyo after an earthquake possibly caused by volcanic activity.

No one felt the seaquake, and no damage or injuries were reported.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Izu Islands, Japan's Meteorological Agency said, and tsunami waves up to one meter above high tide could hit the coasts of the Izu and Ogasawara island chains.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.

The agency expected a slight increase in waves along the coasts of the southeastern Pacific Ocean, but said there was no danger from them.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami measuring about 50 centimeters high was detected in the Yaini area of Hachijo Island about 30 minutes after the quake struck.

The agency added that smaller tsunami waves were detected on three other islands, namely Kozushima, Miyakejima and Izu Oshima.

The agency said the quake struck off the coast about 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of Hachijo Island, which is about 300 kilometers (185 miles) south of Tokyo.

Residents on Hachijo Island said they did not feel the quake and only heard a tsunami warning, NHK reported.

The tsunami is believed to be linked to underwater volcanic activity, said Fumihiko Imamura, a seismologist at Tohoku University.

He said a larger tsunami wave could arrive later, and urged coastal residents to remain vigilant while the warning is in effect.

About 21,500 people live on the islands in the Izu group and about 2,500 people live on the Ogasawara Islands.

Japan lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a line of seismic faults that circle the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the world's most earthquake- and tsunami-prone countries.

Meanwhile, unprecedented rains have caused deadly flooding and landslides in a coastal area of the country still recovering from a devastating earthquake on New Year's Day.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest emergency warning for Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, urging residents to take maximum precautions in what it said was the heaviest rainfall ever to hit the region.

Heavy rains caused 16 rivers in the region to overflow their banks, NHK reported.

One dead, others missing as floods hit Japan after earthquake

At least six people were killed, several were missing and tens of thousands of residents were forced to evacuate, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported, citing local authorities.

The weather agency lowered the warning level on Sunday, but asked residents to remain on high alert.
