Small tsunami waves hit the shores of remote Japanese islands on Tuesday morning after an earthquake possibly caused by volcanic activity.

No one felt the quake off the coast, and the tsunami warning was lifted about three hours later. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of possible waves of up to one meter above high tide along the coasts of the Izu and Ogasawara island chains after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Izu Islands. The US Geological Survey estimated the quake's magnitude at 5.6.

About 21,500 people live on the islands in the Izu group, and about 2,500 people live on the Ogasawara Islands.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said tsunami waves measuring about 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) were detected in the Yaini area of ​​Hachijo Island about 30 minutes after the quake struck. Smaller waves were also detected on three other islands, Kozushima, Miyakejima and Izu Oshima.
