Warning lifted after 50cm tsunami hits Hachijojima

A tsunami with a height of 50 centimeters was recorded in Yaini in Hachijojima on Tuesday morning after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck about 100 kilometers north of the volcanic island of Torishima, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A tsunami warning, warning of waves of up to one meter, was issued for the islands of Izu and Ogasawara after the quake, but it was lifted at 11 a.m. A lower-level advisory for the possibility of minor sea level changes remained in effect for the islands, as well as for areas along the Pacific coast from Chiba Prefecture to Okinawa.

The quake struck at 8:14 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, but no areas registered shaking at the Shindo level 1 or higher on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. That's likely due to the quake's relatively low magnitude and its remote location, Shigeki Aoki of the Meteorological Agency said at a news conference Tuesday.

In addition to the tsunami recorded in Hachijojima, a tsunami with a height of 20 cm reached Kozue Port on Kozue Island, and waves with a height of 10 cm were reported in Tsubota and Ako on Miyake Island, as well as Okada on Izu Oshima.

Later Tuesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said the government had not received any reports of damage from the quake or tsunami.

The agency said it was still unclear whether Tuesday's quake was linked to the Sept. 19 eruption of Smith Island in the Izu island chain.

Earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 have occurred frequently near Torishima Island, including a magnitude 6.5 earthquake in 2023.

“Normally, if an earthquake is 5.9 magnitude, it is not on the scale that would cause a tsunami,” said Aoki of the agency.

“The area is very close to Smith Island,” where earthquakes of this magnitude have caused tsunamis in the past, he added.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
