TOKYO: A tsunami measuring 50 centimeters (20 inches) hit an island south of Tokyo on Tuesday after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Izu and Ogasawara islands shortly after the quake but lifted it by 11 a.m. local time, saying tsunami activity had decreased.

Slight changes in sea level are still possible for about half a day. The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 8:14 a.m. local time, was near Torishima in the Izu island chain, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) underground.

At 8:58 a.m., the tsunami reached Hachijo Island, about 180 kilometers from the epicenter, and a smaller tsunami measuring 10 centimeters high was detected on Miyake Island. So far, no injuries have been reported, according to Tokyo police.

The Japan Meteorological Agency had initially forecast tsunami waves of up to one meter (3 feet) in height and advised the public to stay away from coastal areas. While the warning has been lifted, the agency continues to warn against activities such as fishing and swimming due to possible fluctuations in sea levels.
