Tsunami warning issued in Japan after 5.6 magnitude quake

Tsunami warning issued in Japan after 5.6 magnitude quake

A small tsunami was detected on the remote island of Hachijojima on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Izu island chain.

Waves as high as 50 centimetres (20 inches) hit Hachijojima Island at around 9 a.m. (0000 GMT), after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the area south of Tokyo.

The small tsunami was detected about 45 minutes after the quake, which the USGS said was at a shallow depth of 11.7 kilometres (seven miles).

On Miyakejima Island, a smaller tsunami wave was recorded, with a height of 10 centimeters, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

About 25,000 people live on the small Pacific islands south of Tokyo.

Some residents told NHK they did not feel the quake, and there were no immediate reports of damage.

Japan's Pacific coast from Chiba near Tokyo to Okinawa near Taiwan may also see slight changes in the ocean surface in the wake of the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Japan lies on four major tectonic plates and experiences about 1,500 earthquakes each year, most of them minor.

The impact is generally contained even with larger tremors, thanks to advanced construction techniques and well-established emergency procedures.

But the government says the chance of a major earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9 occurring in the next 30 years is about 70 percent.

Experts say the hurricane could affect a large swath of the Pacific coast and threaten the lives of an estimated 300,000 people in a worst-case scenario.

In 2011, a massive 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake off northeastern Japan triggered a tsunami that left about 18,500 people dead or missing.

This led to the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant, causing Japan's worst disaster since World War II and the most serious nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
