Earthquake hits North-South Carolina border as Hurricane Helen approaches

LANCASTER, S.C. (WBTV) – An earthquake was reported along the North and South Carolina border late Tuesday night.

The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management announced on Wednesday, September 25, that a 1.71 magnitude earthquake struck at 11:52 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck off Highway 521 in Charlotte near East Rippon Road in Lancaster.

The earthquake struck just days before Hurricane Helen, which was expected to wreak havoc in Florida and eventually head north toward the Carolinas.

With a stronger hurricane expected to make landfall, it now appears that Helen will remain at hurricane strength through late Georgia, which means stronger winds in our area.

Heavy rain and widespread gusty winds are expected Thursday night, with impacts peaking in time for commuting Friday morning. Gradual improvement is expected to begin Friday afternoon.

Rainfall totals could reach six to ten inches in the mountains and foothills as a result of Helene's rain and the rain we will see on Wednesday before the storm. This has increased the risk of flooding in this area.

Four to six inches of rain is expected in the Charlotte metro area, which could lead to localized flash flooding. Rainfall totals are low in the Sand Hills area.

Winds could reach at least 50 mph in all areas along and west of Interstate 77, causing downed trees and scattered and multiple power outages. The strongest winds are expected locally Friday morning. Winds could reach 40 mph east of Interstate 77.

By Friday afternoon, and certainly by the end of this week, Helen will have moved on and drier conditions will be in place. Temperatures this weekend will be in the 80s with more sunshine and less chance of rain.
