EUSTIS, Fla. – A temporary tarp covers the roof of a family's home in Eustis after a tree fell on top of it as Hurricane Helen moved over Florida Thursday evening.

Homeowners Dawn and Justin Evans spoke exclusively with FOX 35's Kelsie Cairns, explaining what happened.

“It was a big, huge crash and the whole house shook. It was like an earthquake,” she said.

Dawn and her husband, Justin, were camping out in what they call the “safe room” when they heard the incident. So they went to investigate.

They discovered branches in their wardrobe from the tree that had come through the ceiling.

“When I went into our bedroom area, I could smell wood,” Justin Evans said.

The tree has been on the property for years.

“I've lived here longer than I have,” he said.

His tree remained standing during successive Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jane in 2004.

“We survived all of that, but something happened in that hurricane. I think we got on the bad side of the storm when it was coming,” Evans said.

He showed FOX35 the damage to the home inside and out.

There was severe damage to the side of the house and to a concrete wall.

Fortunately, a tree removal service was able to remove it within the hours of Friday afternoon.
