RIYADH: As global efforts to combat climate change intensify, Saudi Arabia is making bold strides in green hydrogen production, positioning itself as a global leader in manufacturing and exporting sustainable energy.

At the heart of this transformation is NEOM, a green hydrogen company, a key component of Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s plan to diversify its economy away from oil and achieve sustainability.

Green hydrogen, which is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy, has emerged as a crucial solution in the fight against climate change.

Unlike gray or blue hydrogen, which is produced from natural gas and emits carbon dioxide or requires carbon capture technologies, green hydrogen provides an emission-free alternative that can be used in various sectors, from transportation to manufacturing and energy storage.

As part of Saudi Arabia's long-term energy strategy, NGHC is harnessing the country's abundant wind and sunlight to produce green hydrogen on a large scale.

This initiative will not only help Saudi Arabia reduce its domestic carbon footprint, but will also position the Kingdom as a major global supplier of green hydrogen, helping other countries reduce their emissions.

In an exclusive interview with Arab News, Wissam Al-Ghamdi, CEO of NGHC, described how NEOM’s focus on green hydrogen aligns with the broader goals of Vision 2030.

“We are proud to say that our vision is driven by Vision 2030,” he said. “Our product, Green Ammonia, will save the world 5 million tons of carbon emissions.”

The NGHC is set to be the cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's green energy ambitions, producing up to 650 tons of green hydrogen per day using renewable energy from extensive solar and wind farms located at NEOM – a futuristic city being built in the northwest of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In fact, NEOM's geographical location, with ideal sunlight and wind conditions, makes it an ideal hub for green hydrogen production.

Cutting-edge technology is at the heart of NEOM's green hydrogen initiative. According to Al-Ghamdi, the company is focusing on improving the scale of its operations.

“We are building the technology at a very optimized scale. The large scale integrates with a lot of small hydrogen stations,” he said.

In addition, Oxagon – the new high-tech industrial zone – will host an innovative hydrogen development center to ensure that the Kingdom remains at the forefront of cutting-edge green energy technologies.

Al-Ghamdi stressed that the entire project was designed with environmental considerations in mind. He said: “Since we started the development and design phase, we built the factory to be environmentally friendly.”

While some critics argue that large-scale hydrogen production could inadvertently create environmental challenges, NGHC leadership emphasizes the sustainable nature of the process.

The company aims to produce hydrogen entirely through renewable energy sources, ensuring minimal environmental disruption.

“We are building the plant to be carbon neutral. We produce hydrogen only from solar and wind energy,” Al-Ghamdi said.
