Get ready to land, cover and wait for the annual “ShakeOut” earthquake drill – KIRO 7 News Seattle

It's almost time to fall, cover and hold on.

This year's annual ShakeOut Day is October 17th.

At 10:17 a.m., millions of people are expected to participate in earthquake drills at work, school or even home.

The goal is to make sure everyone in our state knows what to do in the event of an earthquake.

During the exercise, you will be asked to do three things:

· Fall on your hands and knees

· Cover your head and neck with one arm and one hand

· Continue to wait until the shaking stops

Part of the “cover” step involves finding a sturdy table or desk to crawl under. If you cannot find shelter, hold your head and neck with both arms and hands.

As we learned from the 6.8 magnitude Nisqually earthquake in 2001, roofs can collapse, buildings can collapse and the ground can give way within 45 seconds.

If you live or work in a coastal area, ShakeOut Day is also a great time to practice tsunami evacuation methods.

If you hear the siren on any day other than October 17, officials say you should immediately take the closest tsunami evacuation route inland or to higher ground.
