County Donegal is a hotbed of seismic activity

A minor earthquake was recorded in Culduff, County Donegal, on school equipment in the Republic of Ireland.

Brendan O'Donoghue, who teaches physics at St Columba's College, part of the Global Schools Seismology Project, said their equipment recorded a 0.9 magnitude earthquake from the area.

The college in Stranorlar is one of the most successful schools in the network, having tracked more than 1,000 earthquakes since joining the scheme.

County Donegal itself is a hotbed of seismic activity – thanks to its geology – and school equipment often records tremors that people rarely notice.

The school's equipment often picks up earthquakes in the area, but it has also previously captured sporting events and even weapons tests.

Speaking to BBC News NI, Mr O'Donaghue said their equipment picked up the small earthquake at 02:18 local time on Wednesday.

“Instrumentation picked it up from an area known as the Malin Sea, and it later picked up a magnitude of 2.2 in the North Channel.”

Mr O'Donaghue said a 0.9 magnitude earthquake was not something anyone in the Culduff area was likely to feel, but he said it highlighted the extent of seismic activity occurring across the region.

The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) described the quake as a “fairly small earthquake” and said that “similar events occur from time to time, especially in Donegal”.
