Mandatory earthquake training can affect scheduled meeting times with students

During the Academic Senate meeting on Tuesday, October 1, the earthquake drill exercise became an important topic but raised concern among faculty and staff.

While participation in the training is mandatory for students, faculty and staff, one concern was how the training would impact class meeting times during the middle of the semester.

Leo Barrera, Director of Workplace Safety and Risk Management, explained the rules and guidelines for the exercise. The exercise is scheduled to take place on October 17 from 10:17 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Due to previous comments, the Office of Safety and Risk Management will reduce the duration of training from two hours to just one hour, Barrera said. He added that participation is mandatory for professors and students alike.

“This is required annually, this is something we have to do every year,” Barrera said.

Erica Brenes, vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, said the Oct. 17 earthquake drill would disrupt her class time.

“If I miss an hour of my 90-minute class, I won’t see those students for two weeks of learning time,” Brenes said.

Some El Camino College employees don't feel the earthquake drills change the school schedule.

Equity consultant Robert Williams explained the training process.

“We have to go back and complete the educational plan for the counseling appointment. But other than that, it doesn't have any negative effects on the students. I think it's pretty seamless because I buy into it,” Williams said.

Williams believes a positive approach can help people participate in exercise without any significant problems.

“I think that's how you present it to the students. I think it makes it easier for them to understand the importance of that. And then, if you still take time with the students, to be able to give them the attention that they need, give them the help that they need, I mean,” Williams said. “I think the school is doing a good job.”

Vice President for Academic Affairs Carlos Lopez said the exercises can be an effective way to test systems at ECC.

“This practice is very important, to make sure that we test our systems, to make sure that we can get students out of our buildings, we can get faculty out of our buildings in an efficient way,” Lopez said.

Film teacher Laura Almo said rehearsals were important, as she recalled a time when she was a student in class during an earthquake, claiming that the students were not well prepared.

“This earthquake happened. Literally, everyone was staring at each other. One person went into the doorway, and everyone was just staring. I was just amazed, and I was one of them. After all these years of ups and downs, a big event comes along,” Almo said. “We still don’t know what to do.”
