Delivering much-needed supplies to families affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan – Afghanistan

In collaboration with the Government of Japan, UNOPS worked to provide vital assistance and help meet the basic needs of women and girls affected by the 2023 earthquake in Herat.

In October 2023, several earthquakes struck the city of Herat in Afghanistan, causing severe damage to more than 48,000 homes – including 6,000 female-headed households.

With funding from the Government of Japan, UNOPS implemented the “Emergency Supplies” project. This work addressed the urgent basic health care needs of vulnerable women and girls – including those affected by the disaster in Herat Province as well as from displacement across Kandahar, Khost, Paktika and Nangarhar provinces.

As part of the project, UNOPS procured and distributed hygiene kits, ensuring that essential supplies reach those most in need. The project benefited more than 61,000 people, with about 7,200 women and girls receiving hygiene supplies.

Ensuring access to basic health care needs, including hygiene supplies, is essential for the well-being and dignity of those affected by natural disasters.

His Excellency Takayoshi Kuromiya, Ambassador of Japan to Afghanistan, said: “Our top priority is to provide assistance to those affected in Herat and other parts of the country who are in urgent need of it due to the catastrophic situation they are facing.”
