Another day, another earthquake in the Pacific Northwest

Early Friday morning, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Vancouver, British Columbia. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network said the quake occurred around 2 a.m. in the Salish Sea, about 15 miles west of Vancouver.

The US Geological Survey indicated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 38 miles below the surface, causing mild tremors that were felt by residents of Vancouver and Vancouver Island. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Last month, the Pacific Northwest experienced 87 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or greater, according to Earthquake.com.

The good news is that it is not necessarily an indication of a more severe earthquake. The bad news is that a major earthquake in the region is long overdue.

“An earthquake like this would shake the coast pretty hard,” James Roddy, geoscience information officer for Oregon's Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, told the Bandon Western World.

A recurring 9.0 magnitude event is known as the Cascadia earthquake, Ruddy said. It last struck the area in 1700, according to the US Geological Survey.

Here are details of the four notable earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest in September and early October:

On October 2, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Oregon:

Time: 3:24 p.m. Location: About 150 miles off the Oregon coast. Depth: 8 miles below the ocean surface. IMPACT: Moderate tremors were felt throughout coastal areas, according to earthquake.usgs.gov.

Also on October 2, there was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake southwest of Port McNeil, Canada:

Time: 8:35 AM. Location: Southwest Port McNeil, Vancouver Island. Depth: 6 miles below the sea floor. Impact: Mild tremors were felt in coastal communities, but no major damage or injuries were reported, according to the earthquake website.

On October 1, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake occurred near Bremerton, Washington:

Time: 10:49 a.m. Location: Bremerton, Washington. Depth: 16 miles. Impact: Mild tremors were felt, part of a series of three earthquakes in the Puget Sound area within a week, according to the USGS.

On September 30, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake occurred 12 miles northeast of Kootenai, Idaho:

Time: 8:15 a.m. Location: Near Lake MacArthur, halfway between Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry. Depth: 6 miles. Impact: Mild to moderate-intensity tremors were felt in surrounding areas, according to the USGS.
