Earthquakes shake Lower Mainland, northern British Columbia
A 3.5-magnitude earthquake near Tsawwassen, British Columbia, rocked the Lower Mainland Friday morning, hours before a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in northern British Columbia rocked Fort St. John, according to Earthquakes Canada.
While residents reported feeling the first quake, Earthquake Canada says there are no reports of damage from any of the smaller quakes, and no earthquake damage of this magnitude is expected.
“[The earthquakes] It will feel like a truck hits the curb outside your house. “Your whole house could shake and make a loud banging sound,” said Brindley Smith, a seismic analyst with Natural Resources Canada.
Seismology Canada says the first quake occurred just after 2 a.m. PT in the Strait of Georgia, about 29 kilometers southwest of Vancouver and 17 kilometers west of Tsawwassen.
Initially, it was detected as a 3.8 magnitude quake, Smith said, before better modeling helped the agency determine the quake was of lower magnitude.
Residents reported feeling the quake on Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. People throughout the Lower Mainland also reported feeling the earthquake.
An interactive map from Earthquakes Canada shows where residents reported feeling the quake.

Others took to social media to talk about the quake, including the city of Vancouver. Peter Meisner.

The second earthquake occurred at approximately 5 a.m. MT, about 63 kilometers west of Fort St. John.

Another interactive map from the agency shows that residents felt the mild earthquake near that city.
Smith says that the occurrence of two earthquakes in a row is a pure coincidence.
“It's just pure coincidence, really,” he said. “It's the way earthquakes tend to work. It's very random.”
Smith said the quakes can trigger smaller quakes, but not anything as powerful or larger.
“We're not going to associate this with 'The Big One,'” he said. “People can rest assured there that this will not cause a major shift.”

We have all been told to prepare for the “Big Quake” – a massive earthquake that the destruction of the Lower Mainland is expected to bring. While the damage will be severe, not every part of the region will be hit the same way. Darius Mahdavi went out with some researchers who are creating detailed maps that define risks at a more granular level.
Are we ready for the “big one”?
