A 5.7 magnitude earthquake near Wellington was felt by thousands

Thousands of people have reported feeling shaken by the earthquake near Wellington early this morning.

GeoNet said the 5.7-magnitude quake occurred at about 5.08 a.m. it was 25 kilometers west of Wellington and at a depth of about 30 kilometres.

By 6.10am, more than 37,000 people had reported feeling the quake on the GeoNet website.

GeoNet said the tremor was “strong”, adding on X: “Another reminder that earthquakes can happen anywhere in New Zealand at any time.”

“If the earthquake is long or strong: stay away.”

Both Fire and Emergency Management (FENZ) and police confirmed to 1News that they had not received any calls related to the earthquake.

There is no tsunami threat

Wellington Region Emergency Management (WREMA) said in a statement that NEMA advised there was no tsunami threat.

“Councils, emergency services and utilities are carrying out checks,” the statement said. “As daylight comes, teams will have a better idea of ​​any further impacts.”

The statement said railway lines in the area would be closed for inspections “in accordance with their normal operation”, and urged people to check Metlink for the latest updates.
