A large apartment building in Wellington was evacuated on Sunday and the area was cordoned off due to fears of structural damage following the quake.

On Sunday evening, the Victoria Lane Apartments on Victoria Street were cordoned off and residences evacuated “as a precautionary measure,” police said.

This was due to “concerns of possible structural damage”.

Barriers have been in place at the Victoria Street/Dixon, Victoria Street/Gosney and Dickson Street/Taranaki intersections.

A police spokesman said: “Residents and members of the public will not be permitted to enter the area until an assessment of the building has been completed and the area is deemed safe to return to.”

Just after midnight, a spokesman said the building had been assessed by New Zealand Fire and Emergency Services as safe to re-enter.

He added, “Residents are able to return and the cordons in the area will be removed.”

The 16-storey building includes 123 apartments, in addition to retail and commercial offices on the lower four floors.

A resident of a nearby apartment building previously told RNZ Radio that the building had been evacuated because it had been swaying since the morning quake.

He added that a member of the fire and emergency crew present in the cordon area told him that engineers had been sent.

The man suggested that the sellers “charged exorbitant amounts” for the Victoria Lane apartments because they were supposed to be very secure.

The apartments were completed in March 2023, and are marketed as setting “a new standard for apartment seismic safety as Wellington's first insulated residential development”.
